Somehow we’ve come to believe that greatness is only for the chosen few, for the superstars, the truth is, greatness is for us all. -- Nike
I cannot remember an advertising campaign that has stuck with me like the currentFind Your Greatness campaign by Nike. The commercials have had me rewinding to watch over and over, “YouTubing” to watch, and they have even brought tears to my eyes. The idea behind the campaign is to show that our greatness, those who are far away from the awe and wonder of the Olympics, isn’t any less important that what is being displayed at the XXX Olympiad in London. How amazing is this concept...it’s about all of us having high expectations and journey of achieving these expectations.
This is not about lowering expectations; it’s about raising them for every last one of us. Greatness is not in one special place, and it’s not in one special person. -- Nike
No matter our age, the expectations we place on ourselves can help us find greatness. Greatness isn’t measured only when we reach a certain grade or even a certain status. Greatness is measured by the person and how they find greatness in themselves. For example, our six year old daughter participated today in a 4-H clover kids sheep show. She walked her lamb, she set-up her lamb, and she even answered simple questions regarding her lamb while in the show rink. After she received her “blue ribbon” (albeit for participation only), she had tears streaming down her face. I asked her what was wrong, and she replied that she was so proud and happy because she showed her lamb well. This is greatness.
As we begin preparing for the next school year...what is your greatness going to be? Maybe your greatness will come outside the classroom. Maybe your greatness is running your first 5K or maybe it is something artistic...who knows, but it is something inside you and its worth finding!
How are you going to help your students find greatness? It doesn’t matter where their greatness lies -- academics, organizational leader, athletics, speech team member, leader of a band sectional -- greatness lies in all of our students. Encourage your students to set high expectations, to do the hard things, encourage them to “FIND THEIR GREATNESS”!
Greatness is wherever somebody is trying to find it. -- Nike
