(Sorry for how many times, “LOVE” is used in this paragraph.) Here jumps in Google Classroom. Last summer when I tried Google Classroom, my initial thoughts were this is cool! I LOVE classroom! I was ready to jump with both feet into utilizing this tool right away! Now starting my second semester with Google Classroom, I can say I still LOVE it! Google has even made Classroom better than last semester. Plus, the other day, I had two teachers tell me that they just started using Google Classroom and they LOVE it!
Do you have five minutes? Here are the top five benefits of Google Classroom (in my order).
(5) User Friendly
It literally takes less than five minutes to create a class and to have students sign up for a class! If you want to get creative and change your theme...go ahead, it won’t go over the five minutes! An added plus, is that Google Classroom is also mobile device friendly. Students can open up assignments from their phones or tablets or iPads.
(4) Create Student Assignments and Announcements (And It’s Paperless)
Teachers can create assignments (make a copy for each student or even just make it viewable for students. I recommend only making rubrics and directions viewable to students. This is because I don’t need to have multiple copies of the rubrics in my folders.
(3) Give Real Time Feedback and/or Communicate with Students
Upon completion of grading the assignment, return feedback and grades simultaneously.
(2) Turning In Assignments and Not Sharing Them
Students can easily turn in assignments, either by uploading the assignment, attaching the file from Google Drive, or even add a link. Students can view assignments in their assignments page, they will even have a notification of the assignment due date or even if it is late! I will caution you, it is important to discuss the difference between “Turn In” and “Share”. Students no longer need to “Share” assignments. I personally like that I don’t get email notifications that something has been shared with me!
(1) Teacher Organization
This is what I LOVE the most! Inside my drive is now a folder labeled “Classroom” and inside that folder is a subfolder for every classroom. For each Classroom, I have a folder for each assignment...YEAH...all the student assignments are in ONE place. Who knew organization could be so much fun! Also, classroom folders can be shared...this is an added bonus, especially because I have a student teacher! (See graphic below for organization.)
If you are not convinced about the possibilities of Google Classroom, I just encourage you to give it a try. Try it with only one class, try posting one announcement or one assignment. Google Classroom can easily and effectively be integrated into your classroom with purpose. It is a "cool tool", however, it will enhance your classroom learning environment! II really do think you will LOVE it!
